                                                                    Un homme qui attendait son Titre


 
 Il est 7h du matin. Un Titre m’a été accordé, je dois aller le récupérer à la préfecture. Trop de gens, une immense foule, je prends la file d’attente. Étrange, pourquoi je ne ressemble plus à ces gens-là ? Je ne sais pas. Mais d’ailleurs, ils attendent comme moi, un Titre. Une heure s’écoule. J’ai mal à la tête. Je n’en peux plus. J’étouffe. Je prends mon casque et je mets Fairouz. Peut-être qu’en écoutant Fairouz, le temps passera plus vite. Rita m’appelle pour me consoler : « Tu as de la chance, en 4 mois, tu as ton Titre. Moi, c’était presque un an d’attente. Wael, chez les Occidentaux, nous sommes perçus comme des êtres en transformation, évoluant vers l’humanité. Cela dépend du temps passé ici. C’est ainsi que l’Occident nous voit. Tu ne vivras jamais ta vie beyrouthine ici, ce n’est pas comme à Beyrouth, et ça ne le sera jamais. Ce n’est pas de sa faute, Wael. Arrête de blâmer Beyrouth, c’est la réalité. »

Peut-être qu’elle n’avait pas tort, mais je me demande parfois pourquoi nous sommes obligés de vivre ainsi. Pourquoi ?  
Mon tour arrive. J’avance. Comme une photo, un fonctionnaire me prend, me découpe soigneusement, et m’accorde un Titre.
